Bill of Fare: City Streets Cafe’s menu ranges from bar food to fine dining

Co-managing siblings Nick and Tara Bitsakakis offer a cup of a popular beer at the City Streets Cafe in East Windsor.

If you want to try Nick Bitsakakis’ cuisine, you can visit the seasonal festivals where he cooks fast food, or you can come to the City Streets Café in East Windsor for more difficult meals.

Bitsakakis has shared kitchen duties at City Streets with his father, George, for about five years since his mother and stepfather, Amy and Kevin Quigley, bought the restaurant at the Royal Plaza Shopping Center on Route 130. Sa Sister Tara also works there. as a day manager, which makes it a family operation.

George Bitsakakis has a long history in the restaurant business, most notably as a restaurant owner before moving to City Streets. Son Nick was a business leader at Rutgers. While working in his father’s restaurant, he decided he wanted to make it his profession. “I’d rather do that,” he says.

At City Streets, the father-son duo create seasonal themed specialties and shop for local produce when it’s in season. Some dishes are from George Bitsakakis’ restaurant experience, but Nick says he likes to try new things.

“I like to experiment with the food and change the menus,” he says. That’s why you’ll find sushi on a menu that also includes staples like pizzas and burgers. The same menu includes coq au vin (more on that later) and iced duckling.

We started our meal with a traditional bar pizza, $ 7.99, topped with pizza sauce and mozzarella cheese, although it was ‘design a bar pie’ night and we could have added more ingredients. . The pizza was well made, neither too thick nor too thin, with lots of cheese.

A soup or salad accompanies each entree, and the Caesar salad was crisp and fresh with a tangy homemade dressing. The chicken orzo soup, $ 2.99 when sold a la carte, was hot and flavorful with chunks of chicken, veggies, and tiny pasta.

Among the entrees, we tried the Apple Pork Tenderloin, $ 17.99, a juicy and flavorful cut of meat so tender it cuts easily with a fork. The pork was topped with hot apples baked in cider for a wonderful cold weather meal. To complete the plate, a scoop of mashed sweet potatoes and a bunch of fresh green beans.

The Potato Crusted Tilapia, $ 17.99, was a tender, seared fillet topped with a layer of grated potatoes that were fried to a crispy brown. Roasted potatoes and freshly sautéed spinach completed the plate.

Nick Bitsakakis says he found a coq au vin recipe online and decided to give it a try, choosing a cabernet from the restaurant bar to braise the chicken.
The resulting dish, $ 16.99, has a deep, robust flavor that carries over to the button mushrooms, carrots, and pearl onions that are cooked with the chicken breasts. It is a memorable and well executed dish.

We also sampled the lovely pear salad, $ 12.99, a bowl of fresh greens mixed with sliced ​​pears, toasted almonds and Gorgonzola cheese, dressed in the house roasted shallot vinaigrette and topped with six grilled shrimp.

Some desserts are homemade, others are not. We tried the special homemade dessert of the week, $ 5.99, a square of fresh chocolate cake topped with chocolate sauce and crushed peppermint sticks and served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. It was sweet, fun and rich.

City Streets Café has a loyal following, especially among those who like to sit at the bar and watch sports. But the dining room also fills up, as patrons return for their favorite dishes from the eclectic menu or to see what’s new among specialties.

The Quigleys and their extended family have created a lively and welcoming restaurant where there is always something new.
