Brewed – Café Design Challenge

Coffee plants grew wild in Ethiopia and were used by nomadic tribes for thousands of years, only until the 1400s, when people realized they could roast its seeds. By the 1500s, the drink had spread to cafes throughout the Arab world. Cafes first appeared in Turkey, Syria, and Egypt as early as 1530. Since becoming a hotspot for political discussions, they have been banned several times.

Subsequently, throughout the 1600s, coffee shops began to appear in Europe and North America. The French and American revolutions would have been brewed in cafes.

The cafe acted as the perfect middle ground for a meeting. Here, creativity and innovation have flourished through conversations. They have long been associated with writers, artists and intellectuals and provided a safe and comfortable space to share news, discuss philosophy or politics.

Even after centuries, societal functions around coffee continue to play an important role in many cultures around the world. Cafes are at the heart of the coffee culture that has been brewing since that time. Coffee chains like Starbucks have started a new revolution by making “coffee” culture global.

Cafes still serve as hubs for engaging in conversations, socializing, or working in solace. Cafes have now been decorated with multifunctional roles such as retail, center of activities. They collectively act like pods of a city’s identity, building up its crowd.
