British Airways is revamping its Speedbird Cafe short-haul economy menu with some goodies leaving the menu and others joining from July and August. The changes come just over six months after the airline introduced its new catering proposition on short-haul flights.
What’s in and what’s out
As part of the redesign, some dishes will be removed from the menu. Here are the:
- José Pizarro tapas box
- Box of Jose Pizarro vegetarian tapas
- Tom Kerridge Plowman’s Brie Sandwich
- Tom Kerridge Chicken, Bacon and Celeriac Brioche Crunch
- Tom Kerridge Vegan Spicy Cauliflower and Chickpea Wrap
However, many new additions will be added. From July, customers will be able to order:
- Toast Session IPA 330ml
- PLAYin CHOC Dinosaur ToyChoc Box
- Scrapples Chips Apple & Mango 12g
- Pullin’s Three Chocolate Muffin 110g
- MOTH Daisy 125ml
- Bacardi Mojito 250ml
- Ploughman’s Meat Snack Box
- Plowman’s Vegetarian Snack Box
- La Baume Grande Olivette Grenache Cinsault Rosé 187ml
And from August 11, they will be joined by:
- Tom Kerridge Mediterranean Chickpea Flatbread
- Tom Kerridge West Country Cheddar Plowman’s Sandwich
- Tom Kerridge Chicken, Bacon and Celeriac Brioche Sandwich
The changes come six months after the British airline overhauled its approach to onboard food on short-haul flights.

How British Airways changed its onboard options
Late last year British Airways revealed that its short-haul catering partnership with Marks and Spencer would end. The airline had already reduced its catering service to bottled water and a snack on affected flights due to COVID-19, and the M&S contract had reached its natural end. At the time there was speculation that Greggs or Waitrose would step in to fill the void, but instead the new catering partner was revealed to be with Tom Kerridge.
The new menu was developed in collaboration with Tom Kerridge, a British three-star Michelin chef. Kerridge has created a range of new gourmet items for sale on board British Airways short-haul economy cabin flights. The new offering has been named Speedbird Cafe.
Buy Before You Fly is British Airways’ new onboard purchase. In the airline’s previous model, every flight was catered for, with a limited amount of food sold on a first-come, first-served basis. This could mean that those in the back of the cabin could run out of food if the front of the plane were particularly hungry.
British Airways has replaced purchase on board with purchase before the flight. Customers can now pre-purchase food up to 12 hours before their flight from the airline’s HighLife online store. The model means that in theory those in the back of the plane are not hungry. It also helps the airline reduce waste on board, as there is less excess food.
During the pandemic, British Airways replaced buying on board with free water and a small snack for everyone. The airline has opted to continue offering them alongside the new menu, meaning all passengers will be able to enjoy at least a small snack and a bottle of water as part of their ticket price.
