Eat Drink Design Awards 2021: Best Cafe Design

Jury’s comment

A bubbling coffee in Newstead, just north of Brisbane’s posh James Street, Industry Beans has completely transformed an old brick warehouse into the quintessential Queensland daytime eatery – white, bright, airy and welcoming. Arranged over two separate spaces, the former warehouse dock was enclosed in a glass pavilion lined with greenery and flooded with natural light. Behind, a second, high-ceilinged dining room is defined by its light wood oars and tiered banquettes – it’s hard to imagine there’s a bad seat here. The care the designers have put into creating the café’s crisp, clean aesthetic is underscored by a long coffee bar whose espresso machines are hidden under the counter. The treat serves Industry Beans Brisbane’s multi-layered offering: it’s as suitable a spot for long brunches as it is for meetings or informal work sessions, while an eye-catching retail area in the center of the venue draws naturally take-out customers.

Design statement

The brief called for the renovation and extension of an existing warehouse to create a multi-layered coffee-focused destination for casual dining and events, all within a cost and time efficient program. . As a 665 square meter multi-level site, there were two main challenges. First, create and activate several diverse areas that customers can enjoy on multiple visits; and second, to create an intuitive flow between these spatial experiences. The insertion of new floor levels and the construction of a new pavilion met these requirements, while creating a topography on which to overlay the brand aesthetic, defined on the previous sites in Melbourne and Sydney, in this new flagship destination. Inherently sustainable in its reconfiguration of the warehouse’s original features, the design is comprised of durable and timeless materials: crisp white concrete walls and floors, brickwork and wooden surfaces, softened by abundant greenery and enlivened throughout. throughout the day by the movement of natural light streaming through a series of fins above.
