A man has been charged with attempted murder after a woman was stabbed in the chest in the kitchen of a Newcastle cafe. Emergency services were called to an Onyx Espresso Bar in Mayfield around 2:35 p.m. Wednesday after the 27-year-old was attacked by a colleague. Detective Superintendent Wayne Humphrey told reporters the woman was hit with a blunt object before being stabbed. The woman was taken under police escort – with the knife still stuck in her chest – to John Hunter Hospital in serious condition. She is currently undergoing surgery. A 23-year-old man who worked with the woman was arrested nearby shortly after. He was charged with attempted murder and injuring a person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. He was denied bail to appear in Newcastle local court on Thursday. Associated Australian Press
